One Week Of Treatment, A Lifetime Of Relief
Our simple, one-dose treatment is administered on a Monday morning. This single injection is all thats required, so your cat will not have to endure risky surgery or a lifetime of daily medication. After the treatment is administered, your cat spends two nights relaxing with us. Because we are working with radioactive material to cure feline hyperthyroidism, treated cats must stay at our facility for two nights to ensure that all possible safety measures are met. In most cases, patients are released on Wednesday of the same week.
Before Arriving
If your cat is currently taking the anti-thyroid drug Methimazole (Tapazole®), you must discontinue use of this medication three days prior to admission. Also, remember to bring your signed discharge instructions on admission day. This form will be mailed to you in advance.
The Day Of Admission
At 8:00 am on the Monday morning of the treatment week, we hold a collective admissions interview with all clients. This is your chance to meet our doctors and staff that will be caring for your cat. At this time, we will answer your questions and also review in detail our treatment protocol, daily routine and discharge instructions. If you are unable to attend this 8:00 am meeting, other arrangements must be made in advance.
Cat Carriers
All cats MUST arrive in a durable car carrier made of hard plastic. We WILL NOT admit cats transported in cardboard carriers, soft carriers, pillowcases or carried freely.
Feeding
During your cats stay, we will provide Eukanuba® Low Residue cat food. If your cat has a prescription diet or requires a special brand of commercial cat food, you need to bring it to admission. Please place dry food in zip lock bags, pre-measured into daily portions and labeled with your cats name.
Housing & Bedding
Your cat will be housed in Snyder brand cottages while staying at our facility. Bedding will be provided. You may provide special bedding or toys for your cat, but regulations prevent us from returning those to you.
Discharge
Wednesday of the treatment week, all cats will have their radiation level surveyed prior to discharge. We will review your cats stay with us and a copy of the medical record will be provided to you at that time. We will also mail a copy to your veterinarian. There is an extended release protocol available. Our staff can discuss whether this option is right for you.
Follow-up Care
It is important that your regular veterinarian provide necessary follow-up care. We recommend that your cats serum T-4 levels be evaluated at 30 and 90 days after treatment. A comprehensive post-treatment evaluation should be performed and serum chemistry levels should also be checked.
